Descent
Descent is one of
my all time favorite games. It was
one of the first games I bought
soon after it was released in
1995. Going into the mines to
destroy evil robots and rescue
miners in 360 degrees of 3D
movement provided me with hours of
fun on a Pentium 75MH. Years went
by and multiple computers later it
didn't run as well, but I still
had the game on disks sitting on
my shelf.
Then in 1997 Parallax Software
released the source code to the
game engine under a non commercial
license. It took some time but
eventually the DXX-Rebirth
project released an improved
game engine that worked on modern
hardware with lots of other
improvements.
You still need some of the game
files to play Descent. But you can
use the shareware files or
pay a modest sum for the full
game on GOG.
Lastly there was a C++
fork of the project that can
be complied for Linux . I have
complied it and added the package
(d1x-rebirth-git) to the SbK
repository. I dont know if anyone
will use them, but its one of my
favorite games and I hope some
people do try it. With the
shareware files its a free game,
so give it a try.

Descent
2

|
|
In 1996 Parallax Software
released the second Descent game, and it
was better than the first one. The
graphics were sharper and there were more
evil robots. The source code for the game
engine was also released in 1998 like with
the first Descent game. DXX-Rebirth
project also released an improved
game engine for it that worked on modern
hardware with lots of other improvements.
You still need some of the game files to
play Descent 2. But you can use the shareware
files or pay a modest sum for the full
game on GOG.
Lastly there was a C++
fork of the project that can be
complied for Linux. It has both the
Descent and Descent 2 game engines. I have
complied it and added the package
(d2x-rebirth-git) to the SbK repository. I
dont know if anyone will use them, though
I hope some people do try it. With the
shareware files its a free game, so give
it a try.

Descent
3 |
|
|
In 1999 Outrage
Entertainment released Descent 3. This
time there are both indoor and outdoor
environments. There was also a pretty good
multiplayer mode. Like the other Descent
games in 2024 the source code for the
Descent 3 game engine was released, but
without audio and video libraries.
There is a Descent
3 project on github that is still
active producing an open source game
engine. You still need some of the game
files to play Descent 3. But you can pay a
modest sum for the full
game on GOG and that includes its
expansion.
I have complied the open source engine and
added the packages (descent3) to the SbK
repository. I hope some people do try it.
its an awesome game, so give it a try.

While gathering info for
this page I went to the Internet Archive.
A
search brings up lots of fun
freebies like manuals and strategy guides,
Take a look, you never know what you will
find.

Setup
|
|
|
As mentioned in each of the
sections above you need to have the game
files installed for the game engine to use
to play the games. Which ones use, either
shareware or purchased, is up to
you. The first thing you need to do
is make sure the names are in lower case
letters, including the file type.
Descent
Copy the .hog and .pig files to
/usr/share/d1x-rebirth
Descent 2
Copy any .hog, .pig, or .ham files to
/usr/share/d2x-rebirth
Descent 3
Copy any .hog files to
~.local/share/descent3, create the folder
if it doesnt exist. Also copy from the
purchased game or create a missions and
custom folder inside
~.local/share/descent3.
